Dirty on Purpose was a four-piece band from Brooklyn, NY, whose music is often described as indie pop or shoegaze. Composed of Doug Marvin (drums, vocals), Joseph Jurewicz (guitar, vocals), George Wilson (guitar, vocals) and DJ Boudreau (bass guitar),
the band formed in 2002 and started playing around New York. The band's
music is guitar-oriented with alternating male and female vocals.
The band self-released its critically acclaimed EP, Sleep Late For a Better Tomorrow, in 2004 and re-released it on North Street Records in 2005. In 2006, Dirty on Purpose released the full-length debut, Hallelujah Sirens, on North Street Records. After critical praise from publications like Pitchfork Media, Entertainment Weekly, NPR, Allmusic, Filter, Spin, Alternative Press and more, Hallelujah Sirens was nominated for "Best Indie Rock Album" at the 2007 PLUG Independent Music Awards. The band also co-hosted an episode of MTV2's alternative music show, "Subterranean,"
with host Jim Shearer, which premiered the band's music videos for
"Light Pollution," "No Radio" and "Mind Blindness." In 2008, Dirty on
Purpose released a second EP, Like Bees featuring guest female vocals from Jaymay and Holly Miranda. The band then released a free digital-only EP called Dead Volcanoes on RCRDLBL.com.
On December 5, 2008, Dirty On Purpose posted a blog through their MySpace stating "...we're going our separate ways". They said they weren't interested in recording another album, but are still making music. They didn't cite any specific reason for the split up. The band goes on to say that their tour with A Place To Bury Strangers will be their last saying, "...we thought it was an appropriate way to wind things down and say goodbye to our friends and fans.".
